I’ve been fortunate to call Parktown North my home for as long as I can remember!

Memories of going to buy groceries at “Bert Reid the Family Grocer” with my mother, which, at the time, was the only place to buy what you needed.
Mr. Reid, in his red bricked grocery store, which was set back on a dusty open area behind, what was, a Post Office on Seventh Avenue, just before Jan Smuts Avenue, would personally fetch each item you wanted to buy.

. . . . when the then elderly, Mr. Skiff, who was the local bookseller in his tiny little shop on Seventh Avenue, on the corner of Third – more-or-less where Nando’s is now, would drop everything to help the school children – who had just got off the bus, cross Seventh Avenue.

. . . . when Jimmy Green, at his swimming school on the corner of Seventh and First Avenue West, where the Mica Hardware is now, would constantly remind us to ‘keep our bummies out of the water’!

. . . . later, when Mrs. Theo, who with her husband, ran the Parktown North Supply Store – our local Café in what was a beautiful art decor building, where the Il Contadino Restaurant is now, would order, and keep, my imported soccer magazines for me!

Memories of a wonderful suburb!

We have everything – except a community and a willingness, to make so much of Parktown North.

The local residents association – The Parktown North Residents Association (PNRA), does unbelievable, and invaluable, work in the suburb.

This is done with so much dedication and determination, although It must be an absolutely thankless task due to so little support from a dysfunctional community.

Fortunately, we ALL – including those who show no interest in the Suburb, benefit from the PNRA’s effort.
